Tilt. Pour. Enjoy.

Growler Pal

Developed While Sipping Great Craft Beer

PictureJoel (right) with Tom Leykis
Growler Pal was developed quite literally while sipping beers poured from a growler. Inventor Joel Simon, was relaxed and in conversation when it struck him - while he enjoyed the ability to fill growlers with his favorite beer, he really didn't enjoy the process of pouring from them. The simple glass jug, nor its alternatives, are designed with the service of beer in mind. Awkwardly weighted in a manner that strains the pourers wrist, a growler really needs two hands to pour. But if you use both hands, how do you properly position the pint glass? What is the proper position anyway?

A long time beverage industry professional and one who knows glassware and proper service, Joel began seeking answers. After a few pints and many hours searching the web and a variety of industry articles, Joel found that the perfect angle of tilt on a glass is 15 degrees and that the pour must hit the glass about about 1/5 down from the lip. This allows the beer to strike the glass gently and flow downward without adding more oxygen and creating a glass full of foam. A perfect pour would have about 1 to 1.5 inches of foam on top. This will vary slightly by beer style, temperature and carbonation.

With some facts in hand Joel set out to sketch some ideas and after a few modifications he and a friend built the first Growler Pal. The angle of the glass was ideal. The pour was smooth and easy. The head was just right. And, well, the beer was perfect. Joel was quick to engage a designer to modify the concept and a wood craftsman to construct Growler Pals from hard wood. He also took the step to add a cork footing where the glass rests and to make the step removable for cleaning and storage.

Joel has since filed for patent on his design and Growler Pal is available in shops and online. You can get yours here
